National Immunization Awareness Month in August

August is National Immunization Awareness Month With Pleasant View Veterinary Clinic

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and even though the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) were thinking of humans when they declared this observance, it is a great time to remember to get your pets the shots they need. By getting everyone – human or animal – their shots in August, you can take care of all of these needs at roughly the same time. All you need to do to get your pets covered is make an appointment at Pleasant View Veterinary Clinic in Lewistown or Mifflintown, PA.

What is National Immunization Awareness Month?

This is a month sponsored by the National Public Health Information Coalition (NPHIC) and the CDC to encourage immunization of people and pets of all ages. It uses the Month to spread information about the recommended vaccines for different age groups and situations.

Why is This Important?

Many people have the idea that vaccines are only for children, or that they aren't really necessary at all. This public information campaign helps to dispel these myths, educate people on which vaccines are needed at various ages, and inform the public about the safety and importance of immunizations.

What About Pets?

While the NPHIC and CDC do not deal with animal health, a veterinarian will be quick to point out that pet immunization is essential. Rabies, distemper, feline leukemia, and other common diseases can be deadly to animals – and some, such as rabies, can be spread to humans. Therefore, we are using this special month to remind everyone that their pets need their shots just as much as humans.

Once a pet is vaccinated, you can rest assured that it will be safe from the diseases covered by the immunizations. In adult animals, the duration of coverage is typically one year, though, for rabies and some other contagious diseases, protection can last up to three years. Puppies and kittens need boosters every few weeks.
