Is an exotic pet right for me?

Been thinking of getting an exotic pet?  Here are tip and rules to follow these to ensure you and your pet stay happy and healthy.

Even though the price of the actual animal is inexpensive, the cost of housing, food, supplies and veterinary care can add up quick.  Different species often need special caging, specialized diets, and forms of supplements that can all become quite expensive. Especially if it is a larger exotic.

Do Your Research

Never buy an exotic on impulse. They need specialized maintenance and requirements. Along with proper feeding and handling techniques, they take up a good amount of your time.  The key? Make sure that you do your research before buying. Legal research is also VERY important. You will need to check your state and local laws to see if they even allow you to own it.

Being Prepared

Make sure that your home is prepared for exotic animal life.  Is the set up appropriate? Is the cage adequate? Is the temperature okay?  These are all things you will need to consider. Most importantly, think about how owning an exotic will affect your life in the long run.  How long can they live?  Will I be able to take care of it when I am older?

Other Considerations

Chances are your exotic will form a very strong bond to you. Which you might think they is great, but for other people that may need to care for your animal, will not think the same. (IE, your parents, boyfriend, husband, friends, etc.) Many exotics are not good with children because they tend to be loud and over stimulating.  Also knowing what you will do with your pet in case of moves, marriages, and other life events is crucial before making any purchase.

We don’t want to discourage you from owning an exotic, but only want you to be aware of all the things that come with being an exotic owner.  Making sure you sticking to these tips and rules, will not only make your life easier but will also make the animals in your life healthier and happier!
